雷鬼音樂的起源

在1968年左右形成於牙買加(Jamaica)起因是在'60年代，美國音樂工業式微，部分音樂工程師因此出走，尋求靈感。其中有一些來到牙買加。牙買加境內原本就有一些遊唱藝人存在，所以一直有股民謠氣息在醞釀著；所以這一批美國音樂工程師的到來，對牙買加而言不啻是個提昇音樂水準的契 機。加上當地的樂師勇於創新，肯於接受外來事物，於是給予新音樂的創造背景。

雷鬼音樂發源於牙買加，其根源來自New Orleans的R&B。 當時牙買加的樂手根據廣播中聽到的New Orleans快節奏R&B，發展成屬於自己的R&B音樂。 這種稱為Ska的音樂型態，在當時60年代相當盛行。然而在一次非常熱的夏天， 當地的人無法在高溫的戶外彈奏如此快節奏的音樂及跳舞。 當地的樂手就將音樂放慢，而形成了 Reggae音樂。 Reggae這個字是源自於「Ragged」，代表牙買加不修邊幅的舞蹈形式。

而在'60年代中期，牙買加已形成一種音樂形態「Ska」，基本上已有雷鬼的影子在，但這種音樂的節奏很快；後來又發展成「Rock Steady」，節奏變得比Ska慢，再經轉 變之後，並融入「Soul」(靈魂樂)，於'68年左右，「Reggae」正式成形。

【音樂型態】 雷鬼音樂結合了傳統非洲節奏，美國的節奏藍調及原始牙買加民俗音樂， 這種風格包含了”弱拍中音節省略”，“向上拍擊的吉他彈奏”， 以及”人聲合唱”。 歌詞強調社會、政治及人文的關懷。
雷鬼樂是早期牙買加的流行音樂之一，它不僅融合了美國節奏藍調的抒情曲風，同時還加入了拉丁音樂的熱情。另外，雷鬼樂十分強調vocal的部份，不論是獨唱或合唱，通常它是運用吟唱的方式來表現，並且藉由吉他、打擊樂器、電子琴或其他樂器帶出主要的旋律和節奏。而在雷鬼樂當中，你還會發現電貝斯佔了相當重要的比例！雷鬼樂是屬於四四拍的音樂，重音落在第二和第四拍。從音樂中大鼓的部份，我們可以清楚的聽出一個明顯的節奏和固定的旋律線。擁有自成一派、懶洋洋的獨特節奏。
Reggae的誕生頗為輾轉：它演變自Ska，一種急速，結集?古巴/非洲爵士樂及美國節奏藍調的音樂，後來經美國新奧爾良的樂手改良後變成了雷鬼，再傳回牙買加。雷鬼與搖滾樂一樣，只是一個統稱，其支派非常多，有迷幻的Dub、類似R&B的Rocksteady、跳舞節奏的Ragga，Dancehall Rapping等等，是牙買加最聞名的出產。

【雷鬼名稱的由來】
說到這個雷鬼名稱的由來，事實上它是來自於牙買加某個街道的名稱，意思指的是日常生活當中一些瑣瑣碎碎的事情。早期的雷鬼樂其實是一群住在都市裡的窮人用來表達抗議的一種方式，所以在內容方面大部份都是寫一些社會革命的言論，要不嘛就是一堆激進的說詞，有些時候你還真會覺得這歌詞怎麼寫的那麼的尖酸諷刺！
不過，當然不是每首歌詞都是這麼的忿忿不平的囉，也有一些歌詞傳達出來的是正義、希望和崇高、偉大的愛！在1940年時期，雷鬼樂的主要音響設備像是唱盤、擴大器和大型的音箱，都是可以在卡車上移動的，這樣一來不僅方便表演者四處演出，同時也讓雷鬼樂樂更為普遍。1960年雷鬼樂在牙買加十分風行，而這樣的音樂漸漸地也流行到了各個Disco裡面。舞廳裡D.J在雷鬼樂中加入大量的Rap，這麼一來，不僅加強了音樂的節奏感，同時也讓跳舞的群眾更帶勁兒！

【音樂發展】 Bob Marley 跟他的樂團是Reggae音樂的鼻祖。隨著電影配樂成功的流傳到美國， 逐漸影響了白人樂手，在搖滾樂及饒舌音樂中經常可以發現雷鬼音樂的蹤跡。 在Bob Marley死後，Reggae 音樂漸漸沒落。直到80, 90年代， 一種融合了饒舌音樂及雷鬼音樂的新型態出現， 這種叫做dub 或是toasting 的新音樂型態為雷鬼音樂注入了新的生命。 Bob 的兒子 - Ziggy Marley，也是這段時間雷鬼樂界的代表人物。

【雷鬼音樂對世界音樂的影響】
雖然雷鬼樂的成形早在 '68 年左右就產生於牙買加，但本屬地方性的音樂類型， 然而在 '72 年藉由 Island Records 的推廣，這些牙買加的樂手得以妥善利用先進的錄音技術及行銷系統，開始步向國際化。　　

重要人物:
Bob Marley : 有人尊稱他為「雷鬼樂之父」，為牙買加人。他的音樂到他去世( 1981年5月)之後才廣為世人推崇。
UB40 : 英國曼徹斯特起家，致力推廣雷鬼樂不遺餘力。有人稱他們為「雷鬼樂教父」，可以聽聽他們翻唱貓王的Can't Help Falling In Love。
Inner Circle，他們的代表單曲包括1.Sweat (A La La La La Song)--是純正雷鬼樂的入門曲


雖然只有少數的牙買加樂手的音樂流行於世界，但在過去的20年間， Reggae對其他各種音樂都有深遠的影響。 主流搖滾樂手Eric Clapton及Stones到Clash 及Fugees， 都將Reggae融入他們的音樂中，這其中影響最大的要算是在舞曲方面。牙買加特有的舞廳文化 - 百萬瓦特的音響系統, ， 獨一無二的 “one-off” 錄音， 強調drum及bass， 以及饒舌的人聲覆蓋在旋律音軌上的運用，影響了全球的Dance文化， 其他像Dub Remix 也被流行音樂廣泛的模仿。
